Metallurgical Overview

ER4043 is a general-purpose aluminum welding wire containing approximately 5% Silicon (Si). This addition of Silicon lowers the melting point and increases the fluidity of the weld pool significantly compared to the 5XXX series. It is designed primarily for welding 6061,6063 and 5052 alloys. The metallurgy of ER4043 is optimized to reduce solidification cracking, a common issue in aluminum welding, by providing a lower-melting eutectic phase that fills "shrinking" voids during the cooling process.

  • Q: Can I use ER4043 to weld 5083 base metal?A: It is generally not recommended. High-Mg alloys welded with high-Si fillers can form brittle Mg2​Si phases, leading to joint failure.
  • Q: Why does the weld turn dark gray after anodizing?A: The Silicon particles in the weld deposit do not respond to the anodizing process like the aluminum matrix, resulting in a dark gray or black appearance.
