In modern automotive manufacturing, ER4043 is the standard for joining 6XXX series extrusions and 3XX series castings. The 5% Si provides a lower melting temperature than the base metal, reducing the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) width. This is crucial for maintaining the structural integrity of thin-walled automotive components. The welding process utilizes pulsed-MIG to control heat input, ensuring that the magnesium-silicide (Mg2​Si) hardening precipitates in the base metal are not overly coarse, which would otherwise weaken the joint.
