The corrosion resistance of 5154 is rooted in its low copper content (≤0.10%) and optimized magnesium levels. This chemistry facilitates the formation of a stable, amorphous Al2​O3​ protective layer. In the presence of chlorides, 5154 exhibits a higher pitting potential than 6XXX series alloys. Its resistance to intergranular corrosion (IGC) is achieved by controlling the precipitation of the Mg2​Al3​ (β-phase) at the grain boundaries through precise thermal-mechanical processing during wire drawing.
